Southern Living has a wonderful article written by Steve Bender aptly named Smart Garden, Super Color highlighting my Georgia home garden! The April edition has a several page feature on my home garden, and watering methods!

It is always a pleasure to host Steve Bender and Southern Living Photographer Van Chaplin. What a wonderful day it was! Working out how to maintain my yard during the drought was indeed a creative endeavor, but as the article shares, there are ways to maintain your yard when an area has a “no water” alert in place.

Summer Heat

One of the very best parts of the plants outlined by my books is that they are drought resistant. With summer heat bearing down upon us, having plants and flowers that require as little water as possible is important.

A Wonderful Day in Huntsville

Thursday I was in Huntsville, Alabama at the beautiful Huntsville Botanical Garden with Harvey Cotten. Harvey is a tremendous resource in landscape gardens and is Chief Operation Officer at the Garden. More importantly to me (and to you) he is one of the coauthors of Easy Gardens for the South. We presented a workshop with our friends in Huntsville to teach how to use the new book. I am so excited to share with you that the book is now ranked #1 in regional garden books for the South on Amazon! An easy to use reference book, you'll find its organization simple and very reader friendly! A lady told me that she considered it a gardener's first primer on what plants work in the South! I'm so glad, after earning the right to say I've killed more flowering plants than most, I hope you will use it to help me color the South with flowers! We were excited to share the new book and to answer questions during the workshop. It is always a joy to me to answer your questions and hear of your successes in your gardens! I love to hear your stories!
The trip was especially fun because my college roommate Candace was my workshop assistant. It is always wonderful to see her and I appreciate that she indeed introduced me to the Huntsville Botanical Garden and to Harvey! The book is available at the Garden as well as Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, and Home Depot stores. We are thrilled that many bookstores across the South are carrying it as well! Steve Huddleston

Raised around a great-grandfather that was born with a hoe in his hand, a grandmother that let him plant anything in her yard, and parents that loved to work in the yard, Steve Huddleston has had his hands in the dirt since the age of three. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture from Oklahoma State University and a Master of Arts degree in another field from the University of Arizona. In Texas, he has worked at the Dallas Arboretum and as a horticulturist for the cities of Grand Prairie and Grapevine. Since 1994, he has been the senior horticulturist at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. Harvey Cotten has lived and gardened in the south for his entire life. After completing his horticulture degree from Mississippi State University, he worked in both the landscaping and nursery business prior to his current (16 year) position at Huntsville (Alabama) Botanical Garden, where he is currently Chief Operating Officer. Pamela Crawford, author of eight gardening books, started gardening with a love of flowers and a black thumb.
